UK Population Development by country of birth

The chart below shows the development of immigration to the UK by country of birth. Estimates are based on the Annual Population Survey (APS), however it is important to point out that these are not exact. For a more comprehensive estimate of the UK population, please refer to: Population Estimates.

The full year data from this dataset is only available from the Office for National Statistics, up to the end of 2020.

Since January 2021, the UK has experienced a significant influx of immigrants, driven primarily by non-EU nationals. As of June 2023, the total number of immigrants is estimated to be around 1.6 million, with a peak in non-EU migration. This includes approximately 768,000 non-EU nationals in just the last year, with key contributors being nationals from India, Nigeria, and China.

Overall, net migration to the UK, which accounts for the difference between those entering and leaving, reached a high of 672,000 in the year ending June 2023. (Smith Stone Walters) (GOV.UK) (Office for National Statistics)
